This constant communication keeps the employee in the loop and minimizes the pressure on you during the appraisal.
Encourage Two-Way Conversation
Letting the employee talk allows her to acclimate, voice any concerns and feel as though she has a say in her development. One way to involve the employee is to ask her to share her perspective on strengths and weaknesses before you voice your own. You can ask her to help in setting goals and planning for training and development.
Keep a Positive Tone
Typically, evaluations where the news is overwhelmingly favourable toward the employee are much easier on both parties; however, most appraisals include some level of constructive criticism or weakness assessment. You can still maintain a positive tone by keeping the focus on the future.
