Airtel/Tigo Takeover: The fate of employees as procedure delays
The government of Ghana is reportedly set to acquire 100% shares of AirtelTigo, its customers, and agreed liabilities. After this announcement was made in October 2020, the government is expected to temporarily operate the assets and help protect the jobs of employees and the Interests of customers and stakeholders.
The move by Government left many employees of Airtel/Tigo wondering what would become of their employment status when the takeover process is eventually completed.
That notwithstanding, the Minister for Communication, Ursula Owusu-Ekuful has indicated that jobs of workers of the telecommunications giant were secured, adding that government would take the necessary steps to protect the interest of staff of the company when the acquisition process is completed.
According to Minister, the government was however yet to decide on what it will do in the long term, adding that the primary objective at the moment was to maintain the telecommunication giant as a going concern and ensure that the jobs and livelihoods of its staff are protected.
Despite these assurances, the fate of employees continues to hang as the process of finalizing the acquisition delays.
