GEA urges Employers and Workers to prioritize the prevention of Workplace Violence & Harassment
A two-day workshop was held from October 3rd – 4th, 2024 at Erata Hotel in Accra on Prevention of Violence and Harassment at Work. At the workshop, GEA urged both Employers and Workers to step up efforts and implement necessary measures to prevent all forms of Workplace Violence and Harassment. The workshop was an initiative under the ongoing collaboration between GEA and Mondiaal FNV to enhance responsible business practices and decent work in Ghana’s horticulture sector. The training was therefore grounded on the “Employers’ Guide to Preventing Violence and Harassment at Work,” which was developed by GEA with support from the Employers’ Activities Programme of the International Labour Organization (ILO).
The training brought together employers in the horticulture value chain, as well as both local and national union representatives from the General Agricultural Workers Union (GAWU) and the Union of Education, Agriculture and General Services (UNEAGES). The workshop featured interactive activities such as group reflections on case studies of workplace harassment and practical sessions on risk assessment, policy development, and conflict resolution. The training also emphasized the importance of reporting mechanisms, support systems, and tools for monitoring and evaluating workplace culture.
Led by renowned gender diversity and inclusion trainer Bernice Sam Esq., participants engaged in role-playing exercises to address the challenges of implementing workplace harassment prevention policies. The event concluded with the development of actionable roadmaps for companies to prevent violence and harassment.
This training reinforces GEA’s commitment to fostering safe, respectful, and inclusive workplaces not only within Ghana’s horticulture sector but across different industries, in order to enhance responsible business practices aligned with international standards.
