GEA Joins West African Stakeholders in Dakar to Shape the Future of Ethical Labour Migration
The Ghana Employers’ Association (GEA) joined a high-level regional convening in Dakar, Senegal, from April 15–16, 2025, to reflect on the progress of various interventions in enhancing migration governance and chart the future of ethical labour migration within the West African region. Hosted by the International Organization for Migration (IOM) with support from the Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation (SDC), the two-day After-Action Review and Learning Workshop marked the close of the first phase of an IOM-led project “Improving Labour Migration Governance and Ethical Recruitment Practices in Côte d’Ivoire, Ghana, and Nigeria.”
The event brought together key actors across government, the private sector, recruitment agencies, and civil society from the three focus countries to consolidate achievements, share knowledge, and identify bold strategies for sustainable labour mobility.
Representing GEA, Mr. Kingsley Laar contributed to critical discussions on fair recruitment practices, employer responsibility, and the private sector’s role in advancing decent work for migrant workers.
The meeting also explored data-driven approaches to ethical recruitment, gender-sensitive governance, diaspora contributions to regular pathways, and partnerships for skills mobility, an increasingly vital agenda amid rising intra-African migration trends.
Key highlights of the sessions included:
• Country presentations of project results and knowledge products.
• Deep dives into improving intersectionality in recruitment systems.
• Forward-looking panel discussions on strengthening labour governance and aligning efforts with the Global Compact for Migration.
The workshop underscored the importance of multi-stakeholder collaboration in reducing exploitation, enhancing regular migration pathways, and supporting national development through ethical workforce mobility. GEA looks forward to contributing to the next phase of the project and advancing regional efforts to ensure that all migrant workers are recruited with dignity, work in safety, and are empowered to thrive.
