Ports & Shipping Interests Group of GEA holds meeting
The Ports & Shipping Interests Group of GEA held its meeting in Tema on April 16, 2024. The meeting was addressed by the General Manager – Corporate Planning of the Ghana Ports and Harbours Authority (GPHA), Mr. Khalid Nuhu on behalf of the Director General of GPHA.
He addressed concerns of members of the group regarding the following:
- current and future state of operations of the port
- prevailing tariff structure
- obligations of business operations within the ports
- other matters of relevance
Members thereafter raised other issues and concerns on
- the need for GPHA to initiate steps to revamp the Tema shipyard for it to be productive since it is the only Dry dock in the sub region.
- that GPHA should actively involve all stakeholders whenever it becomes necessary to review its tariffs
- that the tax regime among operators of the ports is too excessive and therefore the need for GPHA to dialogue with the Government/ GRA for a downward review
- that GPHA policy of registering new stevedoring companies must be reviewed to stem the increasing rate at which new stevedoring companies are being registered, since in reality those already in the system are unable to secure the required concessions within the ports.
