UNESCO engages GEA on strategies to transform technical and vocational education in Ghana
A seven-member team from the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) paid a courtesy call on the CEO of GEA, Mr. Alex Frimpong, to exchange ideas on strategies to transform Technical and Vocational Education (TVET) systems in Ghana. The visit formed part of the inception phase activities of UNESCO’s new TVET project named “Better Education for Africa’s Rise” (BEAR).
The CEO emphasized that for the project to offer better employment opportunities to the teeming youth whiles addressing the evolving needs of the Ghanaian labour market, there is the need for UNESCO to focus on identifying and building partnerships with key private sector actors to implement its related plans and activities. He also recommended, among others, the need for UNESCO to target sectors that have high employment potential such as manufacturing, Agro-based processing, Tourism & Hospitality, as well as Construction for direct and specific interventions. The conclusions of the meeting would inform the design and implementation of the BEAR project in Ghana, Sierra Leone, Nigeria and Cote d’ivoire.
